Green Temple

Lyrics/Poems by Avrom Sutzkever
Translation by Nathan Wolski

Somewhere dwells a man of wonder, to whom

You are precious, and your tired imagination rests and reposes

In his tender gaze. He perceives

Every tone that chimes in your blood.

By night he is a white dream

Illuminating the abyss of your desire.

You know him. You’ve met him before—

Only you didn’t know that it was him.

Only tree roots, the thoughts

Of the earth, beneath deep-dark layers find

Their springcastle, sealed shut,

Behind which waits an eternal light.

Only green earthy fingers

Touch the naked flesh of time, —

Cut through the stony oppressor,

Are redeemed, liberated at last.

Therefore, I ask the forestthought:

Go ahead, transform my every limb

Into a root—that I shall like a hero

Penetrate to the ground of poetry’s source

And with a gush cool my thirst

And forestial delight my chase.

Bring me to the unexplored source

Where the beginning of creation dawns.

Forestrevelation. The green doors open.

Lead me, O eternal life, to the mirror of my spirit,—

I have not yet met him.

The night surrounded my way

With insignificance, and I am like the stork

Whose nest has been reduced to ashes.

But like the silence in a seashell

Rustles in me the sun—do you hear? Do you see?

The forest’s green doors draw me,

I open them and stride through door after door.

My senses lily-flower and feel

The caress of forestial shine.

The tiniest blade of grass outgrows me, I crouch

Beneath its breezy touch.

My green sadness—reveals the secret:

Seek in every bloom a door.
